A finger spool is simple, has nothing to jam and carries enough line for recreational SMB deployment. Why practise SMB deployment?
Because the failure mode is being dragged upward by a rising buoy with the line wrapped around you. It should be practised shallow, repeatedly, until releasing the spool is automatic.
How much line do I need?
Enough for the deepest dive you plan plus a margin. For recreational depths a 30 metre spool is generally sufficient.
Should everyone carry one?
Most experienced divers would say yes for boat diving. Being on the surface without a marker in any swell is how divers get lost.
