Is gas time remaining a gas plan?

A computer set to air on a nitrox fill will run you a conservative but harmless profile; a computer set to EAN36 on an air fill will let you swim well past your real no stop time. How much does the algorithm and its conservatism setting matter?

A decompression algorithm is a mathematical model of how inert gas moves into and out of tissue compartments. Different models, and different conservatism settings within the same model, will give two divers on the identical profile no stop times that differ by tens of minutes.

Shearwater units run Buhlmann ZHL-16C with gradient factors, which is the model most technical divers use because it exposes the conservatism as two numbers you set rather than hiding it.
