Where it falls short
- Electrochemical sensors are consumable. They age, they drift, and they need replacing. A sensor past its life gives readings that look normal and are wrong, which is the worst failure mode an instrument can have.
- It must be calibrated before use, normally against air at 20.9 percent, and a reading taken without calibrating is not a measurement.
- Readings are affected by temperature, humidity and pressure, so flow the gas slowly and let the reading settle rather than taking the first number that appears.
- It reads oxygen only. It tells you nothing about carbon monoxide, moisture or contaminants, which are a real concern with a poorly maintained compressor.

How do I use an oxygen analyser?
Calibrate it in clean air, away from any running compressor or exhaust, so it reads 20.9 percent. Then flow gas from the cylinder slowly through the T-piece and let the reading stabilise before recording it. Set your computer to the number you measured, log it, and calculate your maximum operating depth.
How long does the sensor last?
This unit uses a sensor rated for three years. Electrochemical sensors age whether or not you use them, and an expired sensor drifts while still producing a confident-looking number. Note the date, replace on schedule, and treat a unit that will not calibrate to 20.9 in clean air as unserviceable.
Does an analyser tell me if the air is safe to breathe?
