What it does well

  • A user-replaceable battery is a real advantage over a rechargeable computer. A spare battery in a save-a-dive kit means a flat computer never costs you a dive.
  • Four modes cover the whole recreational range, and gauge mode means it remains useful if you later dive with a different primary computer.
  • It is the computer most dive shops rent, so if you learned on one the interface is already familiar and so is the way it presents information.
  • Nitrox to 50 percent covers every recreational nitrox mix, and the audible alarms are genuinely useful for ascent rate.
  • At around three hundred dollars it is half the price of a premium computer while doing the job a recreational diver needs.

Where it falls short

  • The algorithm is conservative, and that is the consistent complaint from divers who use one alongside a buddy on a Buhlmann computer. You will hit your no-decompression limit sooner and you will be told to slow down more often.
  • Conservatism is not a defect, but it is a real trade. A computer you routinely ignore because it nags is worse than a computer you follow, so the fit between the algorithm and how you dive matters.
  • The monochrome segment display is far less readable than a colour screen in poor visibility, which is where a Peregrine earns its price difference.
  • The interface is button-heavy and modal. Changing the mix before a nitrox dive is not something you do casually with cold hands.
  • A dive computer models tissue loading with an algorithm; it does not measure it. No computer knows your hydration, your fitness, your temperature or your day, all of which affect decompression risk.

Is the Suunto Zoop Novo too conservative?

It is conservative relative to Buhlmann-based computers, and that is the consistent finding among divers who use both. On a normal recreational profile most divers never notice. On repetitive multi-level diving across several days you will reach your limits sooner than a buddy on a Shearwater. Conservative is not wrong; it is a trade for shorter bottom times.

Zoop Novo or Shearwater Peregrine?

The Peregrine has a far better screen, adjustable gradient factors and a rechargeable battery, at roughly twice the price. The Zoop Novo is half the price with a user-replaceable battery and a display that is harder to read in poor conditions. Both are safe recreational computers used correctly.

Can I use it for nitrox?

Yes, it is programmable from 21 to 50 percent oxygen, which covers all recreational nitrox. Diving nitrox requires nitrox training, and the workflow is not optional: analyse the fill yourself, record what you measured, set the computer to that mix and calculate the maximum operating depth before you get in.

Does it have air integration?

No. It does not display tank pressure. You dive it with a submersible pressure gauge, which is standard recreational practice. If air integration is a requirement, look at computers that pair with a transmitter, and budget for the transmitter separately.

Can I share a computer with my buddy?

No. A computer tracks the loading of the diver who wore it through the profile it recorded. Passing it between divers gives both of you numbers that do not describe your own diving. Every diver in the water carries their own computer or dives tables they have planned themselves.
