Where does the extra money actually go?

Three lines account for roughly two thirds of the difference between this and the beginner build, and they are worth understanding individually rather than as a price jump.

The regulator. The Cressi MC9-SC uses a sealed, balanced diaphragm first stage. Balanced means the intermediate pressure it delivers to the second stage does not fall as the cylinder empties, so the last 500 psi of a dive breathes exactly like the first 500. Sealed means the internals are isolated from the water, which keeps silt out and stops the first stage freezing in cold water. Neither of those matters much in 80 F water at 40 feet, and both matter a great deal at 55 F and 100 feet. The full reasoning is on how to choose a regulator.

The BCD. The Mares Bolt SLS is back inflation on a rigid harness. All of the lift sits behind you, so the bladder is not wrapping your waist and pushing you upright, and you can hold a flat horizontal position without working for it. Flat trim is what makes finning efficient, what keeps your fins off the reef, and what stops you silting out a wreck. The trade is that a wing pushes you face-down on the surface until you learn to lean back into it.

The computer. The Shearwater Peregrine runs Buhlmann ZHL-16C with user-set gradient factors, which means the conservatism of the algorithm is a setting you can see and adjust rather than a number the manufacturer chose for you. That is a genuinely different relationship with a computer, and it is the reason the same firmware appears on units costing twice as much. What did not change from the beginner build, and why?

Four items are identical, which is worth saying because gear lists tend to upgrade everything to justify the page. The snorkel has nothing above it worth paying for. The Trilobite cutter is the right answer at every tier, and a titanium knife is a different tool rather than a better one. The surface marker and spool are commodity items where spending more buys you a colour rather than a capability.

The mechanical pressure gauge also stays, and it stays for the whole life of the kit. Even on an air integrated setup, a gauge that works without a battery is the last thing standing when electronics fail, and it costs about a hundred dollars to never have to think about it.

Should you add air integration at this level?

Air integration puts cylinder pressure, and usually a calculated remaining gas time, on the same screen as depth and no-stop time. It removes a hose from your left side and it removes a task from the dive, which is the honest benefit: less looking at two things.

The Peregrine in this build has no air integration at all. Adding it means either the Peregrine TX or a Tern TX , plus a Swift transmitter at around $445. That is a meaningful sum for a convenience, and transmitters do not cross brands, so the decision locks you into an ecosystem.

Our position: buy the computer you want on its own merits, dive it for a season, and add the transmitter only if you find yourself wanting it. What can you skip from this build?

  • The backup mask. Genuinely optional on a guided reef dive, genuinely not optional on a shore dive an hour from the car park.
  • The compass, if every dive you do is guided. Buy it the day you plan a navigation dive.
  • The light, in clear daytime water. A night dive changes this immediately, and a night dive needs two lights rather than one.
  • The wrist slate, on a single level dive with one plan.
  • The save-a-dive kit, if you only ever dive from a shop that has one. That exception disappears the first time you travel.

What you cannot skip: the regulator service schedule. A sealed balanced first stage that has not been serviced is not better than an unbalanced one that has. Budget for it annually and keep the receipt, since several makers void a free-parts-for-life warranty the moment the schedule slips.

What should you upgrade first from here?

  1. Exposure protection, if your water is colder than the suit. This is the upgrade that changes the most dives, because cold ends dives early and raises gas consumption. A higher end 5 mm or a step to a 7 mm both beat any other spend at that point.
  2. A second computer, before a bigger one. A backup computer, even a cheap Puck Pro Ultra , means a failed primary at depth ends one dive rather than a trip.
  3. The mask, if you shoot photographs. Ultra clear glass such as the Atomic Venom is a real optical difference rather than a marketing one.
  4. Fins, when you start frog kicking rather than fluttering.
  5. A cylinder, last, and only if you dive locally most weekends.
